MAPLAB – MEDIALAB KATOWICE’S WORKGROUP
Pawel Jaworski, Studio NAND
WORKGROUP FREE OF CHARGE
MapLab is a work group of Medialab Katowice established to conduct moderator supervised studies on spatial development of Katowice. The team uses open source GIS (geographic information systems) software and data made available by the city administration to monitor the development and parameteres of areas intended for different uses. The results of their work will be utilised by another team to deliver a number projects on the city’s history as part of the Urban Date Stories cycle.
The opening session will include a presentation of the plans by the task team, followed by a discussion and invitation to attend the project as well as a lecture by Stephan Thiel and Steffen Fiedler from Studio NAND.
WHAT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS CAN BE GAINED FROM THE PROJECT?
The participants will learn to read, organise and process spatial data relating to urban issues of varying degrees of complexity. In addition, through cooperation with teams of designers, they will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the various ways of presenting the completed analyses.
HOW WILL THE GROUP BE RUN?
We will meet in KATObar on 22 May for a seminar with Stephan Thiel of studio NAND to talk for the first time about different ways of using and visualizing spatial data. We will use this opportunity to find inspiration for our team, which will then proceed to work according to the following schedule. The first meeting of the group will be held on 8 June, during which we will learn the basics of using GIS software, review the databases at our disposal and perform some simple analyses. At the end of the month (28 June) we will deliver a workshop, to which we will invite the previously mentioned designers working on the history of the city, so that our activities can be optimally coordinated. The entire cycle will close in the autumn with a summary workshop led by the said Studio NAND.
WHO CAN APPLY? WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE OR SKILLS ARE REQUIRED? HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE PROJECT?
The group can be joined any person interested in studying the spatial development of cities. Equipment requirements: a laptop computer with administrator credentials, onto which the software can be installed.
