WILD STYLE. DATA VISUALISATION IN THE PUBLIC SPACE
Steffen Fiedler & Stephan Thiel, Studio NAND
WORKSHOP FREE OF CHARGE
The workshop will explore ways to bring together data visualization and the urban public space by creating hybrid forms between infographics and street art. Participants are invited to use either public datasets related to the city of Katowice or to create data themselves using custom methods. Using these data, we will then design stencils, objects and installations in public space to raise awareness of the data at the places where they matter most, acting as informing graffiti and street artists.
WHAT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS CAN BE GAINED FROM THE WORKSHOP?
The overall methodology of working with data, e.g. formats, tools, its strengths and limits. Participants will also learn simple methods of creating visualizations using basic geometrical shapes and typography. In this process we will look at the fundamental basics of data visualization design and it’s rich history. This will allow us to research/establish parallels to the evolution of street art and graffiti.
HOW WILL THE WORKSHOP BE RUN?
Participants will decide on a dataset approx. two weeks before the workshop to have enough time for preparation. If you want to create a custom dataset, collecting information on your own, then you should use this time to build your own dataset. The workshop itself will introduce various methods in extracting information from you data using simple tools as well as methods to create simple information graphics without any programming knowledge. In the end, we will produce objects or stencils using simple materials, e.g. cardboard, and use them in the streets!
WHO CAN APPLY? WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE OR SKILLS ARE REQUIRED? HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE PROJECT?
Participants will need a laptop to work on their own. Experience using vector graphic design software, e.g. Illustrator, and data processing software, e.g. Excel, is helpful. However, you are very welcome work in teams in order to bring together different skillsets.
