CONNECTING WITH YOUR URBAN ENVIRONMENT

Wesley Grubbs, Pitch Interactive

UDS_Workshop_Icon WORKSHOP FREE OF CHARGEFREE OF CHARGE

We will focus on several techniques for gathering, understanding and visualizing data from our urban (or rural) environments. Using some more traditional and non-traditional techniques this workshop will teach to build datasets from environmental noise, the media we read, and other completely random and experimental methodologies. We will use statistical models to find the stories that are in the data we collect and then meander in the creative process to search for ways to visualize the data we collect.

HOW WILL THE WORKSHOP BE RUN?

(1) Introduction to statistics and then the Arduino, (2) data collection and looking for stories, (3) data visualization and the creative process.

WHO CAN APPLY? WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE OR SKILLS ARE REQUIRED? HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE PROJECT?

This is for everyone really. It’s for beginner or advanced. Some computer experience will help but it’s not entirely required. I’ve given this workshop to various groups and found that if there are advanced students, they will typically jump in to help with me with the less advanced to get things moving smoothly. Preparing for workshop, participants need to have Processing and Arduino downloaded (the latest versions) and run on a relatively newer mac or pc. I’ve found that the older mac’s that run on 10.6 or less may have driver issues.
